At least 16 people have lost their lives following separate violent attacks in Katsina and Plateau states, worsening concerns over insecurity in parts of the country.
In Katsina State, armed bandits reportedly attacked Jeka da Kolo and Kwalgoro villages in Kankia Local Government Area on Sunday afternoon. According to police reports, the attackers stormed the communities and opened fire on residents, killing 11 people before security operatives moved in and forced them to retreat.
The Commissioner of Police in the state strongly condemned the attack and ordered security teams to intensify efforts to track down those responsible. Additional tactical officers were also deployed to the affected communities to prevent further violence.
Police authorities explained that the latest attack may have been a reprisal following recent operations against bandits in the area. In recent weeks, security operatives had reportedly foiled cattle rustling attempts and recovered several stolen animals and motorcycles from criminal groups.
Residents have been urged to stay alert and provide useful information that could help security agencies in their investigations.
Meanwhile, in Plateau State, five people were reportedly killed during another attack in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
A resident said the victims were returning home around 9 p.m. when gunmen suddenly ambushed them and opened fire without warning. Four people died instantly, while another victim later passed away in the hospital.
Community leaders described the incident as heartbreaking and called on security agencies to strengthen protection in the area to prevent more attacks.
In another development, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) confirmed that two of its workers were abducted along the Ibadan-Ijebu Ode road in Ogun State.
The company said the incident happened on April 29, 2026, but did not reveal the identities of the affected staff members. IBEDC stated that it is working closely with security agencies to secure their safe release and is supporting the families during the difficult period.
The company added that updates would be provided as investigations and rescue efforts continue.
