By Sulayman Waan
Dr. Demba Sabally, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security has said that President Adama Barrow has personal commitment to Gambian farmers.
Speaking to farmers in a recent presentation of farming equipment, inputs and structures by RRVCDP to rural farmers at Pacharr in the Central River Region South, Dr. Sabally commended The Gambia Government for providing funding for the farmers.
He added: “President Barrow has a personal commitment to farmers.”
Moving forward, he said the Government of President Barrow is quite aware of its responsibility to mobilise and invest resources into agriculture which is the productive base of the economy.
“However, the strategy being pursued is one that will strengthen farmers to be self-reliant. This can only be better achieved if the farmers are organized into strong cooperatives,” he said.
He therefore registered appreciation to the project for the cooperative support model they are using.
Dr. Sabally called on the cooperatives to take ownership of the support and continue getting in touch with the Department of Cooperative Development to acquire knowledge on the management of cooperatives.
“I request the Register General of Department of Cooperative Development to work closely with the project to ensure the department is able to take over these cooperatives once the project ends,” he requested.
