A devastating accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of five passengers, while 12 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Carpark C section of the expressway when a Mazda bus rammed into a truck.
According to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, the truck was attempting to make a turn at the Carpark C area when the Mazda bus, which was speeding, collided with it from the rear. A total of 19 people were involved in the crash, with five fatalities, 12 injuries, and two individuals escaping unhurt.
The vehicles involved in the accident were a yellow Mazda bus with registration number LGB 465 XA and an ash-colored Howo truck with registration number KKU 167
Akinbiyi urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid excessive speeding on the highway, emphasizing the consequences of such actions. “While TRACE, FRSC, and the Police commiserate with the families of the deceased, drivers are again warned against excessive speed,” he stated.
The injured victims were rescued and taken to the Redeemed Christian Church of God Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital and Idera morgue in Sagamu by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar accident that occurred at the same spot on April 18, which left two people dead and two others with severe injuries. The Commandant General of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, had previously highlighted the dangers of excessive speed
The TRACE and other road safety agencies are once again calling on drivers to prioritize road safety and adhere to speed limits to prevent such tragic incidents.
