World leaders are speaking out against the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, calling it an act of political violence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese are among those who expressed relief that Donald Trump and others were unharmed. Modi emphasized that “violence has no place in democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.
The incident occurred when Cole Tomas Allen, 31, attempted to breach security at the Washington Hilton hotel, armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives. A Secret Service agent was shot but survived due to a bulletproof vest. Allen has been charged with attempting to assassinate Trump and is being held in custody.
The international community is condemning the attack, with leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer denouncing the violence. The White House Correspondents’ Association has announced plans to reschedule the event.
