Nigeria: Imo police command takes action against officers for assault

The Imo State Police Command has demoted a sergeant and reprimanded two inspectors for their involvement in an assault incident along the Owerri-Aba Expressway. The officers, attached to the Safer Highway unit, were found guilty of breaching the Police Force code of conduct and human rights standards.

A viral video showed police officers assaulting a man along the Owerri-Aba Road, prompting the Command to initiate disciplinary action. After reviewing the video and conducting an orderly room trial, the Command found Sergeant Anayo Ekezie guilty of using his smoke gunner to assault the victim. As a result, Ekezie was demoted from Sergeant to Corporal.

Inspectors Ofem Obongha and Obinna Okereke Severely reprimanded for failing to exercise proper supervisory control, allowing the unprofessional conduct to occur.

The Imo State Police Command has emphasized its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and protecting citizens’ rights. The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, condemned the officers’ actions, stating that there is zero tolerance for police misconduct.
