Nigeria: French tourist Pietier Gilles found dead in Gboko hotel room

The death of French tourist Pietier Gilles, 67, in a hotel room in Gboko, Benue State, has been described as unnatural by the Benue State Police Command. According to the police, Gilles lodged at Hotel Jovina on June 6 and fell ill the next day, but refused to go to the clinic or hospital. Despite his worsening condition, he was found dead after a medical practitioner was called in for examination.

The police have commenced an investigation into the matter and have not made any arrests yet. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death. The police spokesperson, Udeme Edet, assured that updates will be provided once the autopsy is concluded. 

Gilles was reportedly a tourist who arrived in Nigeria from Niger Republic on May 19, 2025, traveling on a sports bicycle as part of a long-distance tour.
