In a welcome turn of events, Brig.-Gen. Maharazu Tsiga, the former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, has been released by his abductors after spending 56 days in captivity. Tsiga’s freedom was announced by his family member, Shamsuddeen Badaru, on Facebook.

Tsiga was abducted on February 5, 2025, in his hometown of Tsiga, Katsina State, along with at least nine others. Tragically, one person was killed during the attack. Despite his family paying a ransom, Tsiga was held captive for weeks. There were conflicting reports about the ransom amount, with some sources claiming it was N60 million, while others stated it was triple that amount.

The news of Tsiga’s release comes as a relief, especially considering the rise in abductions by suspected bandits in Katsina State. Just recently, four students were kidnapped from Paris Quarters, located behind the Federal University, Dutsinma, in Katsina State.

Tsiga’s family had been working tirelessly to secure his release, and their efforts have finally paid off. The Police Public Relations Officer of Katsina State Command confirmed that they were aware of Tsiga’s release, but were waiting for official confirmation.

The incident highlights the growing concern of banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions. The government and security agencies must work together to address this issue and ensure the safety of citizens.
