A devastating incident has occurred in the Usha community of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State, Nigeria. A 54-year-old farmer, Jeremiah Onuminya, reportedly slumped and died due to a false alarm raised by some youths in the village. The alarm claimed that Fulani herdsmen were attacking the area, triggering widespread panic.
According to eyewitnesses, Onuminya was on his way to his farm on Monday when the false alarm was raised. In an attempt to escape, he ran for his life but unfortunately collapsed and died just a few meters from his house.
The incident has been confirmed by the Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin James, who expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased. James revealed that the family had declined his suggestion to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Onuminya died from exhaustion while fleeing, and there is no evidence to support the claim that he was attacked by Fulani herdsmen. The local government council has urged residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information that could incite panic and disrupt the peace.
The incident highlights the dangers of spreading false information and the importance of verifying facts before sharing them. The council chairman has appealed to residents to exercise caution and verify information before sharing to prevent the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents.
In a related development, the chairman of Miyeitti Ala Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Benue State chapter, Risku Mohammed, had alleged that a farmer in Usha had poisoned 20 cows belonging to one of his members in the LGA. However, there is no evidence to suggest that this incident is linked to Onuminya’s death.
The incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and accurate information-sharing in times of crisis. The local government council and security agencies have pledged to work together to maintain peace and security in the area.
