A heartbreaking case of domestic violence has shaken the Onicha Ngwa community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, where a man allegedly set his wife and children ablaze over suspicions of infidelity.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday between 1 and 2 a.m., left the community in shock. According to reports, 40-year-old Udochi Amala, in a fit of rage, allegedly doused himself, his wife Amarachi, and their three children with fuel before setting them on fire.

The blaze claimed the life of their one-year-old daughter immediately, while Udochi—who also sustained burns—was caught after attempting to flee. In a disturbing statement, he reportedly said, “I have an issue with my wife, and I didn’t know it would come to this. I’m tired of life,” yet he admitted he never actually caught his wife with another man.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Abia State, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed that authorities are aware of the incident and have launched a full investigation.

The Abia State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has strongly condemned the attack. In a statement released Tuesday, FIDA chairperson Njideka Aniawonwa and secretary Eberechukwu Kanu Oji described the act as a horrifying violation of human rights.

“This tragedy is not just a crime; it is a complete betrayal of the duty to protect one’s family,” the statement read. FIDA is calling for swift justice and greater support systems for survivors of domestic violence and child abuse.

Tragically, an unconfirmed report suggests that Amarachi and the couple’s two surviving children passed away late Monday while receiving treatment at a hospital.

FIDA has reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of women and children and is urging the public to speak up against domestic abuse and report suspected cases before they escalate into irreversible tragedies.
