A major disaster was narrowly avoided on Monday in Oyo State when a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) crashed and caught fire.

The incident occurred at NICO Farm, along the Iseyin/Oyo Road in Iseyin Local Government Area. According to eyewitnesses, the tanker, with Lagos registration number LM62XP, lost control while in motion, somersaulted into a nearby ditch, and caught fire.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident and said firemen responded promptly after receiving the alert at 10:46 a.m.

He explained that firefighters, led by PFS1 Azeez, arrived swiftly and used chemical foam compounds to contain the blaze. Their quick intervention prevented an explosion and stopped the fire from spreading to nearby structures or vehicles.

“The fire was completely extinguished and normal traffic flow was restored on the road,” Akinwande stated.

No casualties were reported as of the time of the report.
