Nigeria: NDC clears Peter Obi for 2027 presidential primaries

By Zuleihat Owuiye, Nigeria

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, to contest its presidential primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi, who was screened by the party’s national screening committee on Tuesday, emerged as the sole aspirant after purchasing the presidential nomination form.

Speaking after the screening, Obi dismissed speculation that he had emerged as the party’s consensus presidential candidate, emphasizing that the process remained open and democratic. “How can it be based on consensus? The party opened up the expression of interest forms for people to buy. I bought the form. As the party said, I’m the only one who expressed interest. That’s it,” he said.

Obi commended the NDC for conducting a transparent screening process, stating, “At NDC, we are choosing to do things properly. When we say there is going to be a screening, there is going to be a screening. That is democracy in action.” He also outlined his priorities for the 2027 general elections, focusing on building a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria through inclusive governance anchored on the constitutional principle of federal character

Obi emphasized the need to address hunger, poverty, and corruption, noting that public resources must benefit all Nigerians rather than a privileged few. “So many Nigerians go to bed not knowing where the next meal will come from. That must change. We must stop turning public assets into private wealth,” he added.

The former Anambra State governor also met with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso after securing the NDC presidential primary clearance, with Kwankwaso expressing optimism about the party’s prospects.
