A domestic dispute in the Elega area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, took a tragic turn on Saturday night when a man named Olamide accidentally struck and killed his one-year-old son during a fight with his wife.
Witnesses reported that the altercation became violent, and Olamide attempted to hit his wife with an iron rod, but the weapon instead hit their child on the head. The couple’s co-tenant, Bolatito, said she was alerted by the mother’s cries for help. She rushed over and learned that the child, Ayinde, had been hit.
Bolatito recounted that they rushed the boy to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. Initially, they thought he was still alive after returning home, but a second hospital visit confirmed his passing. She added that the husband had a history of beating his wife and that she had previously lost a pregnancy due to the abuse.
The community chairman, Ramoni Adegbola, also responded to the incident. He said he heard neighbors shouting for help and found the couple with their injured child. He noted that Olamide was known for frequently taking illicit substances and had collapsed in the past after using drugs.
Olamide reportedly fled the scene after the incident but later turned himself in to the police. The police confirmed that an investigation is underway.
