Thirty-two cows were struck dead by lightning during a heavy downpour in the Osara area of Obantoko, Abeokuta, in Ogun State’s Odeda Local Government Area on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The estimated value of the animals is about N100 million.
Chief Wasiu Afolabi, the Baale of Osara, confirmed the incident to reporters on Sunday, adding that Sango priests would perform traditional rites before the animals are buried. Government sanitary officers are expected to oversee the burial.
The elder brother of the cattle owner, Hassan Momodu, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the cows as the sole source of livelihood for his younger brother and over 20 others who depend on the business. He appealed to the Ogun State Government for assistance to help them recover from the devastating loss.
He said, “This was a terrible natural disaster. My brother has lost everything. We’re pleading with the government to support him so he can rebuild his business.”
Community leaders, Fulani herders, and the police held a meeting on Sunday to ensure peace and plan the next steps. Officials including the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Daisi Elemide, and the Odeda Local Government Chairman, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, visited the scene to express condolences and assess the situation.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident via WhatsApp, stating that it was reported at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and the Aregbe Division responded promptly.
The cows were reportedly grazing when the lightning strike occurred around noon. Videos of the incident have been circulating, showing the scale of the loss.
