The Police Service Commission (PSC) has ratified the dismissal of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and four other officers implicated in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, sparked widespread outrage and raised concerns about police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.
According to reports, Ogidi was shot dead by ASP Usman after being apprehended in connection with a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol and live ammunition. The police had received intelligence about the suspicious parcel, and Ogidi was intercepted at a busy transport hub in Effurun. A viral video showed Ogidi pleading for his life before being shot at close range by Usman.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, had ordered the dismissal and prosecution of the officers involved, stating that their actions were “unlawful and unprofessional”. The PSC’s ratification of the dismissal marks a significant step towards accountability and justice for Ogidi’s family.
The incident has reignited debates about police brutality and the need for reform within the Nigeria Police Force. Activists and human rights groups have welcomed the PSC’s decision, calling for swift prosecution and punishment for the officers involved.
The case has also sparked fears about the safety of citizens and the potential for misinterpretation in high-tension encounters. Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo expressed concern that such incidents could affect unrelated professions, such as actors and production crews, who may be mistaken for armed individuals.
The Nigerian Bar Association has called for the trial to be held in Delta State, citing the need for justice to be seen to be done. The case has become a test of Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and police reform.
