MoYS approves D10 Million for Gambia Men’s Volleyball Team, introduces historic match-win bonuses

Banjul, The Gambia, 9 September, 2026 – The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) has approved D10 million to support The Gambia Senior Men’s National Volleyball Team in its participation at the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Volleyball Nations Championship in Tunisia, scheduled for 13–26 September 2026.
The landmark support package represents a major investment in Gambian volleyball and comes at a significant moment for the national team, which secured qualification for the continental championship after a historic Zone II triumph over Senegal in June.
In an unprecedented move for Gambian volleyball, the Ministry has also introduced match-win bonuses for the national team, meaning players and the technical team will receive a financial bonus for every match won during the championship.
The initiative is designed to motivate the players, recognise their commitment and sacrifice, and provide additional incentives as they compete against Africa’s best volleyball nations.
This is the first time the Ministry of Youth and Sports has introduced a match-win bonus scheme specifically for the national volleyball team, marking a new chapter in the government’s support for volleyball.
Reacting to the announcement, President of the Gambia Volleyball Federation, Bai Dodou Jallow, expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for what he described as a historic commitment to the national team.
“This is a very significant moment for Gambian volleyball. We sincerely appreciate the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Government of The Gambia for believing in our players and investing in their journey to the African Championship.”
“The D10 million support will give the team the resources needed to prepare and compete with confidence, while the introduction of match bonuses is a tremendous motivation for the players. It shows that their hard work, sacrifices and performances are being recognised.”
The GVBF President further called on Gambians at home and abroad to rally behind the team.
“We need the prayers, encouragement and support of every Gambian. This is Team Gambia. When these players step onto the court in Tunisia, they will carry the hopes and aspirations of an entire nation.”
The Gambia’s qualification for the 2026 African Men’s Championship follows a historic Zone II campaign in which the national team defeated Senegal 3–2 in the final in Banjul to secure its place at the continental championship.
With the latest D10 million package and the introduction of match-win bonuses, the Government and the GVBF are hoping to provide the national team with the necessary backing to compete strongly in Tunisia.
