Gambia’s Music Sector Takes a Historic Stand for Gender Equality

In a moment of triumph for art and activism, the Gambian music sector has taken a transformative step forward, pioneering the fight for gender equality through the historic launching of the #HeForShe Music Movement. The initiative, officially launched at the 4th annual Neneh on Mamos Media Gender Cup Awards 2025, was a resounding success, proving that the nation’s artists are more than entertainers—they are change-makers.

At the forefront of this movement stands Dembo Jobarteh aka Baddest Manager, a true pioneer whose dedication has helped bring this vision to life. His leadership has been instrumental in driving the initiative forward, ensuring that artists play an active role in advocating for gender equality.

A grand wave of appreciation goes out to the visionary forces behind this movement: ST the GOAT, Nyancho aka Apachaky, MOLZE, Barhama Cham, One Pac, AK, Jali Suso, Jali Sidia, and many other influential thespians. Their commitment to supporting women and children in the fight against gender-based violence marks a defining moment in Gambian music history.

The night itself was electric, a “Mini-Bercy” unfolding on the highways of the OIC, thanks to ST and Nyancho’s remarkable energy and presence. Enthusiastic performances from a powerhouse of artist. Sector leaders like Njundu Badjie, Singhateh Rejoice, Ali Wally, Prince Deli, Starboy Njie, Mass Boy, Ndoko Swagger Prince, Fafading Singhateh, and the entire Apachaky Entertainment Team—brought life to an event destined to make a lasting impact.

Adding a special touch, Hon. Minister Fatou Kinteh graced the occasion, witnessing firsthand the surge of artistic commitment to gender equality. Her presence reaffirmed the government’s support for transformative efforts led by cultural forces in the battle against sexual and gender-based violence.

A heartfelt congratulations goes to Jali Suso, the winner of the prestigious Neneh 2025 Gender Award—a victory celebrated not only as a personal achievement but as a triumph for the movement itself. The commitment displayed by artists proves that change is no longer an abstract dream—it is an unstoppable force within The Gambia’s creative industry.

A special recognition goes to Fantanka, the capacity-building pioneers on gender equality, whose dedication to training on positive masculinity has strengthened the movement’s foundation. Their efforts were rightfully acknowledged at the event, further reinforcing the importance of fostering gender equity through education and advocacy.

Behind the scenes, the event would not have been the same without Neneh Bojang and Mariama Jobarteh, whose unwavering support fueled the initiative’s success. A grand thank you extends to all media partners who amplified the moment—QTV, Gam-Talents TV, Ultimate Media, Sasusneh TV, and MAMOS Media.
Even the smallest contributions played a significant role in bringing this vision to life. MJ Hairdressing and Express Beauty Salon, who generously decorated the venue, proved that solidarity comes in all forms—each action counting toward a greater cause.

As The Neneh Gender cup successfully achieved it’s 4th year and Gambia’s first-ever #HeForShe Music Movement takes root, one thing is clear: artists are no longer just performers—they are advocates, leaders, and Ambassadorial pioneers in shaping a future where gender equality is more than an ideal, but a reality.

This is just the beginning, and the echoes of this movement will resonate for generations to come.
