Banjul The Gambia, July 17, 2026 – The Gambia National Olympic Committee has officially welcomed Africell as an Official Partner of Team Gambia for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone in strengthening private sector support for the Olympic movement in The Gambia.

Speaking at the partnership unveiling ceremony, Africell representative Musa Sise described the agreement as a landmark achievement and reaffirmed the telecommunications company’s commitment to supporting Gambian sports and the aspirations of Team Gambia.

“This partnership reflects Africell’s continued commitment to national development through sport. We are proud to stand with the Gambia National Olympic Committee and Team Gambia as they prepare to represent the nation on the international stage,” Sise said.

GNOC Second Vice President and Commonwealth Sport Focal Point Bakary K. Jammeh described the partnership as a defining moment for Commonwealth sport and the wider Olympic movement in The Gambia.

“This is a momentous day for Commonwealth Sport and the entire Olympic movement in The Gambia. Through this partnership, we are not only supporting our athletes but also strengthening the connection between Team Gambia and Gambians around the world.”

Jammeh also highlighted preparations for Gambia Day, scheduled for 26 July in Glasgow, an event aimed at bringing together Gambians living in the diaspora alongside sports personalities, coaches and athletes.

The celebration will feature traditional Gambian music, dance and cuisine, while also providing an opportunity for networking with partners and engaging Gambians in the diaspora in a sports talent scouting initiative.

“We are inviting all Gambians in the diaspora, sports personalities, coaches and athletes to Gambia Day. It will be a celebration of our culture and a platform to connect with our people abroad. Our partnership with Africell will help make this vision a reality,” Jammeh added.

GNOC Secretary General Yorro Njie echoed similar statements, emphasizing that the collaboration demonstrates the growing confidence of the private sector in supporting sports development and the Olympic movement.

GNOC President Bai Dodou Jallow hailed the agreement as a significant milestone for Gambian sport, noting that Team Gambia carries the nation’s hopes every time it competes internationally.

“This is an important moment for us. We are representing our country at the Commonwealth Games, and one of our key objectives is to build strong partnerships. Having Africell join us as an Official Partner is a significant development. It shows that the private sector is now coming on board to support the Olympic movement in The Gambia.”

President Jallow expressed optimism that the partnership would continue well beyond Glasgow 2026.

“We are looking for an even greater partnership in the future. With the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal on the horizon, we don’t want to go to Dakar alone, we want to go with Africell.”

The partnership underscores GNOC’s commitment to building sustainable collaborations with the private sector while ensuring Team Gambia is well supported as it competes on the international stage. It also reinforces Africell’s role as a key corporate partner in advancing sports development and promoting national pride through the achievements of Gambian athletes.
