Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the ongoing demolition of private properties across Nigeria, describing the actions as “unlawful, insensitive, and deeply inhumane”. He emphasized that state governments’ actions are particularly condemnable, given that most demolitions were carried out without prior notice.
Obi highlighted the devastating impact of these demolitions on citizens, stating that they destroy livelihoods, undermine businesses, and threaten the economic security of hardworking individuals. He noted that many shops contained goods worth billions of naira, representing years of investment and toil, and questioned the legal authority behind such actions without prior notice or due process.
Obi urged the government to ensure that urban development and enforcement respect the rule of law and citizens’ rights. He emphasized that citizens deserve protection for their investments, livelihoods, and dignity, and that the government must prioritize compassion and relief measures for struggling families and small business owners.
The demolition of private properties sends a chilling message to entrepreneurs, undermining the foundations of economic growth and social stability. Obi stressed that every citizen has the right to build a life through honest work, and that right must be protected.
The government must balance its duty to enforce the law with its responsibility to protect its citizens. Obi’s statement serves as a reminder of the need for compassion and fairness in governance, particularly in situations where livelihoods are at stake.
