The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned that the rise in internet fraud is making it harder for Nigerians to travel abroad.

According to the commission, cybercrime is damaging the country’s reputation and forcing other nations to impose tougher visa restrictions on innocent Nigerians. Officials stressed that the problem goes beyond stolen money—it also robs citizens of opportunities, jobs, and infrastructure, while costing the nation billions of naira every year.

The EFCC boss cautioned young people against getting lured into internet fraud, describing it as a trap that often ends in disgrace, loss of freedom, or even jail time. He reminded them that “digital footprints never disappear,” warning that offenders will eventually be caught.

Instead of chasing quick money, youths were encouraged to explore opportunities in technology, business, farming, and the creative industries. The EFCC said it will continue raising awareness, strengthening enforcement, and working with communities to curb the menace.

This warning comes at a time when stricter visa rules have already been rolled out by some countries, reducing the validity and flexibility of certain Nigerian visas.
