GAMBIANS ALLOWED TO APPLY FOR UK ANCESTRY VISA
The United Kingdom government has highlighted a major immigration pathway that allows qualifying foreign nationals, including individuals from The Gambia and 21 other African countries, to live and work in Britain, under the UK Ancestry Visa Scheme.
The UK Ancestry visa offers eligible applicants a five-year stay in the country. Despite its benefits, many eligible individuals remain unaware that the scheme exists.
The African nations whose nationals can apply include: The Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Cameroon, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Sierra Leone, Mauritius, Seychelles, Togo, Gabon and Zimbabwe.
Although Zimbabwe was suspended from the Commonwealth in 2002 and formally withdrew in 2003, it remains separately featured on the UK government’s eligibility list under a distinct provision for its nationals.
To qualify for the scheme, applicants must be Commonwealth citizens who can prove that at least one grandparent was born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. In addition to nationality and heritage requirements, prospective applicants must be at least 17 years old, intend to work in the UK, and prove they can support themselves financially without relying on public funds. Successful candidates receive an initial five-year visa that permits them to work and live in the UK.
After completing five years of continuous residence under this route, visa holders may become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), establishing a clear pathway towards permanent British settlement and citizenship.
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh, has reported that the UK government has published official rules outlining restrictions placed on ancestry visa holders during their stay in Britain.
For example, Commonwealth citizens on the ancestry visa are barred from switching to the category while already in the country on a different visa. Despite these key restrictions, ancestry visa holders enjoy broad work freedoms, including self-employment and voluntary work.
