Nigeria: Trump’s quest for Nobel Peace Prize unlikely to sway committee

US President Donald Trump’s bid for the Nobel Peace Prize seems unlikely to influence the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which insists on making independent decisions based on merit rather than media attention.

Trump has openly expressed his desire for the prestigious award, claiming he “deserves it” for his efforts in ending conflicts and promoting peace. He points to his role in brokering the Abraham Accords, a landmark agreement between Israel and four Arab countries. However, critics argue that his policies and actions don’t align with the values of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee emphasizes its independence from party politics and the sitting government. Its secretary, Kristian Berg Harpviken, notes that the committee considers each nominee based on individual merits, unaffected by media campaigns or public pressure. The committee will choose from a longlist of 338 individuals and organizations, with the winner announced on October 10.

Experts see little chance of Trump receiving the award due to his “America First” policy, which contrasts with the multilateralism advocated by Alfred Nobel. Some historians have even argued that Trump’s admiration for Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his handling of conflicts make him an unlikely candidate.

The nomination process for the Nobel Peace Prize is extensive, with thousands of people eligible to submit names. While Trump has received nominations and backing from several foreign leaders, the committee remains committed to its independent decision-making process.

The Nobel Committee’s decision will be based on a thorough evaluation of each candidate’s merits, with no consideration for external pressure or media attention. As Harpviken notes, “The great achievement is to become a laureate,” not just to be nominated. Ultimately, the award will go to the individual or organization deemed most worthy by the committee.
