Subject: Concerns Over Selective Law Enforcement and Threats to National Peace
Dear Inspector General,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the perceived selective application of the law when dealing with political supporters and issues of public incitement. The actions of the police in recent incidents have raised serious questions about fairness, impartiality, and the commitment to maintaining national peace and unity.
It has come to my attention that opposition supporters are frequently subjected to arrests and questioning, while individuals aligned with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) are allowed to incite division and make inflammatory statements without consequences. A case in point is Babucarr Bahum, a known supporter of the ruling government, who has repeatedly made public insults against communities, regions, and the Mandinka ethnic group. His latest remarks, in which he labeled the people of Kiang as “ungrateful,” have caused outrage and threaten to sow discord among citizens.
Shockingly, instead of addressing this blatant incitement, a police officer, Binta Njie, who merely called for Babucarr Bahum to be questioned in order to restore peace, is now under police investigation. This action sends a troubling message that law enforcement is being used to silence those who seek justice while protecting individuals who engage in inflammatory rhetoric.
As the head of the police force, I urge you to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and national unity. The laws of The Gambia should be applied equally to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. If individuals engaging in incitement and insults are not held accountable, it risks escalating tensions and undermining public confidence in the police force.
I respectfully request that you take immediate action to ensure that Babucarr Bahum is held accountable for his inflammatory remarks, just as opposition supporters have been subjected to scrutiny. Furthermore, I urge you to ensure that Officer Binta Njie is not unfairly targeted for performing her duty in the interest of peace and stability.
The Gambia is a democratic nation where the rule of law must be upheld impartially. I trust in your leadership to take the necessary steps to restore public confidence in the police force and protect the unity of our beloved country.
I look forward to your swift and fair response.
Yours sincerely,
Lamin samateh
