The Nigerian Senate has pledged to expedite the establishment of state police following the abduction of 87 students and teachers in Borno and Oyo states. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele condemned the attacks, describing them as a grave threat to national security and the future of education in Nigeria.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu visited Oyo State, ordering intensified rescue operations and deploying additional tactical assets to secure the release of abducted victims. The police chief met with security stakeholders, assuring residents of the force’s commitment to protecting schools and communities.
The Senate aims to conclude constitutional amendments for state police by June 2, 2026, pending approval by state legislatures. Bamidele urged governors to prioritize the proposal, citing the need for localized security measures.
Amotekun, Oyo State’s security agency, has launched forest operations to rescue abducted pupils, collaborating with hunters, vigilantes and police.
