Nigeria: Suri Noelle: Tom Cruise’s daughter legally drops his surname in apparent final break

Suri Cruise, the 20-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, has legally changed her last name — a move that appears to formalize the distance that has long existed between her and her father.

According to reports, Suri has dropped “Cruise” and is now using the surname “Noelle,” taken from her mother’s middle name. The change came to light after she registered to vote in Pennsylvania under the name Suri Noelle while attending Carnegie Mellon University.

In the US, voters are required to register with their legal name. That means the change was not just a preference, but an official legal update. Celebrity outlet Page Six reported that Suri did not file the name change in Pennsylvania, suggesting it may have been done earlier while living with Holmes in New York.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married in 2006, a year after they began dating and welcomed Suri. Their split in 2012 was highly publicized, and Holmes was granted primary custody of their daughter.

Since then, Cruise and Suri have rarely been seen together. The last widely circulated photos of the pair together date back to 2012. In the years since, Holmes has largely raised Suri on her own in New York, away from the intense media spotlight that followed the Cruise name.

Reports over the years have pointed to Cruise’s commitment to the Church of Scientology as a factor in the estrangement. Holmes has never publicly detailed the reasons for the distance, and Cruise has also remained largely silent on the topic.

Changing a last name is not uncommon, especially for children of famous parents who want privacy. But for Suri, the timing and the choice of “Noelle” carry weight.

Noelle is Katie Holmes’ middle name. By taking it, Suri is aligning herself more publicly with the parent who raised her, rather than the global movie star she shares a last name with.

The change became public through voter registration records in Pennsylvania, where Suri is now a student at Carnegie Mellon. Registering under “Noelle” instead of “Cruise” suggests she intends to use the new name in official settings going forward.

Page Six noted there was no record of the name change filing in Pennsylvania, which has led to speculation it was processed in New York, where Suri lived with Holmes through high school.

Despite the legal separation signaled by the name change, Cruise has spoken publicly about his daughter in recent years.

“Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy,” he said. “I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.”

However, reports at the time also said Cruise did not attend Suri’s high school graduation. That absence, combined with more than a decade of no public appearances together, has fueled ongoing speculation about the state of their relationship.

Holmes and Cruise said at the time of their divorce that they were committed to co-parenting. In practice, Holmes has been the primary parent. She has been photographed with Suri frequently over the years in New York — at school events, walking in the city, and attending theater.

For celebrity children, a last name can be both a door opener and a burden. “Cruise” brings instant recognition, but also constant comparison and scrutiny.

By choosing “Noelle,” Suri appears to be making a deliberate choice for a lower profile and a separate identity. It’s a name with family meaning, but without the global brand attached to it.

Legal experts note that name changes for adults are routine, but when they involve children of A-list celebrities, they often read as symbolic. In this case, it aligns with what has already been visible for years: Suri has lived a life largely separate from her father’s career and public image.

Suri is 20 and in college, studying in Pittsburgh. She has not made public statements about the name change. Holmes has not commented either.

Cruise, meanwhile, continues to work on major film projects, including the _Mission: Impossible_ franchise. He has three other children — Isabella and Connor with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, and Suri with Holmes.

The change to “Noelle” doesn’t legally sever a parent-child relationship, but it does mark a clear step in how Suri presents herself to the world. 

For more than a decade, the public has watched Suri grow up mostly in photos with her mother. Now, with a new name on official records, that separation has been made formal.

Whether it leads to any change in her relationship with Cruise remains unknown. For now, Suri Noelle is the name she’s chosen to use as she starts her adult life.
