Keir Starmer has warned that Vladimir Putin could invade Ukraine again unless the US provides
security guarantees. The UK prime minister made the statement as he arrived in Washington for
critical talks with President Donald Trump.
Starmer urged Trump to commit to a US “backstop” for a British and French-led peacekeeping
force in Ukraine. He emphasized that this was the only way to avoid Russia plunging Europe
back into war.

However, Trump has already stated that he has no plans to provide security guarantees for
Ukraine, saying “We’re going to have Europe do that.” This statement has raised concerns about
the future of Ukrainian security and the role of the US in the conflict.

Starmer’s visit to Washington comes at a critical moment for European stability. The UK prime
minister is expected to press Trump for a security guarantee, without which British troops may
not be committed to a peace-keeping force in Ukraine.
The situation in Ukraine remains dire, with Russia’s aggression ongoing. Starmer has
emphasized that Putin is the aggressor and that Russia bears full responsibility for the conflict.
