Nigeria: Spain vs Argentina: World Cup 2026 final set for New York showdown

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will end with a heavyweight clash as Spain take on defending champions Argentina in the final at MetLife Stadium, New York New Jersey, on Sunday.

Both teams have been the standout sides of the tournament, but they arrive in the final in very different ways. Spain have looked composed and clinical. Argentina have survived by grit and late drama.

It’s also a final with a storyline the world didn’t expect: Lionel Messi vs Lamine Yamal, the infant in Messi’s arms nearly two decades ago, now a teenager leading Spain’s attack.

They started slowly with a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde, then clicked into gear and won six straight matches.

Spain beat Austria 3-0 in the round of 32, edged Portugal 1-0 in the last 16, and came from behind to defeat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Their best performance came in the semi-final, where they beat France 2-0 in Dallas to book their place.

The defining stat: Spain have conceded just one goal in the entire tournament. Their defense has been rock solid, and their midfield control has allowed young stars like Lamine Yamal and Pedri to thrive going forward.

At 17, Yamal has been Spain’s breakout player. His pace, composure, and creativity have made him one of the faces of the tournament.

Lionel Scaloni’s side cruised through the group stage with wins over Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. But the knockout rounds have tested them at every turn.

They needed extra time to get past Cape Verde in the round of 32, did the same against Egypt in the last 16, and again went beyond 90 minutes to beat Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-final, Argentina finally won inside regulation time, beating England 2-1 to reach a second consecutive World Cup final.

It has been a tournament defined by resilience. Messi, now 39, has led from the front once again, but Argentina have had to dig deep in almost every knockout game

The most talked-about matchup won’t be on the tactics board. It will be Messi vs Yamal.

Years ago, during a UNICEF charity calendar shoot organized by _Diario Sport_, a young Messi was photographed bathing an infant. That infant was Lamine Yamal.

The photo resurfaced during Euro 2024 after Yamal’s father shared it online, and it quickly became one of football’s most iconic images.

Now, in 2026, the two will face each other for the first time in a senior international match — and it will be in a World Cup final.

It’s a full-circle moment that captures how quickly football moves. The legend passing the torch, the teenager trying to take it.

Spain come in as the more balanced team. They control possession, defend as a unit, and have not looked rattled at any stage. Their unbeaten run and defensive record make them favorites on paper.

Argentina come in with experience, mentality, and Messi. They know how to win ugly, how to survive pressure, and how to deliver on the biggest stage. That’s exactly what they did in 2022, and they’ll be trying to do it again.

Both teams also carry the weight of history. Spain are chasing their second World Cup title after 2010. Argentina are chasing back-to-back titles, something only Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962 have achieved.

Sunday in New York won’t just decide who lifts the trophy. It will decide whether Spain’s new generation can topple the last great team of the Messi era.
