Plateau United forward, Vincent Temitope, was stabbed by an irate fan after their Nigeria Premier Football League match-day 33 defeat against Nasarawa United in Lafia on Sunday. The incident occurred despite Vincent’s impressive performance, scoring a goal and missing a penalty during the 3-2 loss.
A video of the player being treated for a cut around his neck surfaced, sparking widespread concern. Jos-based on-air personality Rhairom Zamora shared the disturbing footage, claiming the attack was perpetrated by Nasarawa United fans. “Disturbing scenes after the match in Lafia. Vincent Temitope was reportedly injured by Nasarawa United fans after the game. Absolutely unacceptable, player safety must be a priority,” she posted.
The incident has raised questions about fan behavior and safety in Nigerian football. Both Plateau United and Nasarawa United, as well as the league body, have been urged to release official statements and take action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The intense match saw Nasarawa United take an early lead through Anas Yusuf’s 15th goal of the campaign. Plateau United reduced the deficit through Vincent’s solo effort but fell behind further after Ugochukwu Leonard’s goal. Despite a late penalty opportunity, Vincent’s spot kick was saved, and Nasarawa United sealed the win with a third goal.
The incident highlights the need for increased security measures and stricter fan conduct regulations in Nigerian football. As the league nears its conclusion, clubs and authorities must prioritize player safety and take decisive action against violent fan behavior.
