Nigeria: Odumeje claims some Nigerian pastors fake miracles in Churches

By Zuleihat Owuiye, Nigeria

Popular Nigerian cleric Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, widely known as Odumeje, has accused some pastors of staging miracles during church services, raising concerns about the credibility of religious practices in the country.

The Anambra-based preacher made the allegation during a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast, where he spoke about what he described as the growing trend of arranged miracles in Nigerian churches.

Odumeje expressed dissatisfaction with the alleged practice, claiming that it had become increasingly common and influenced his decision to decline invitations to minister at other churches.

According to the cleric, he has turned down several requests to appear as a guest minister because of his concerns about staged miracles.

“Arrangees [staged miracles] in churches are becoming too much in Nigeria. That is why I don’t go to other clerics’ churches as guest minister. I have turned down a lot of invitations,” he said.

The preacher maintained that the miracles associated with his own ministry were different, insisting that the people involved could be identified and their experiences independently verified.

“The miracles we do here, we see their faces. You can take their names and verify,” Odumeje stated.

He suggested that the ability to identify individuals who claim to have experienced miracles was an important factor in establishing the credibility of such accounts.

Odumeje also made a bold comparison between his ministry and those of other Christian leaders in Nigeria. He claimed that no other Nigerian cleric could perform miracles similar to those he said occurred through his ministry, except the late Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly known as TB Joshua.

The preacher referred to TB Joshua as his “father in the Lord”, highlighting the respect he has for the late televangelist.

TB Joshua was the founder of The Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN), a Lagos-based ministry known internationally for its religious services, healing sessions and claims of miraculous interventions. He died on June 5, 2021, at the age of 57.

Odumeje, who leads the Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention and Deliverance Ministry in Anambra State, has become a widely discussed figure in Nigeria’s religious community because of his energetic preaching style, dramatic church performances and outspoken remarks.

Over the years, his public statements have frequently attracted attention, particularly when he speaks about religious practices and other prominent figures.

His latest comments have once again brought the issue of alleged staged miracles into the spotlight, prompting broader questions about transparency and accountability within religious institutions.

While many worshippers regard miracles as an important part of their faith, concerns about possible deception at religious gatherings have remained a subject of public discussion.

Odumeje’s allegations, however, do not independently establish that the practice is widespread or that any specific pastor has staged a miracle. The cleric did not identify particular individuals in the reported comments.

His remarks also highlight the importance of distinguishing between personal religious beliefs, claims of supernatural experiences and allegations of deliberate deception.

For religious leaders, maintaining public confidence often involves being transparent about their activities and treating worshippers with honesty and respect.

Odumeje’s comments have added his voice to the ongoing conversation about the role of religious leaders in Nigerian society and the responsibility that comes with the trust placed in them by their followers.
