Nigeria: How Luna Winter gained 700,000 Instagram followers without an agency

German content creator Luna Winter, popularly known as Milkiwifey, has built an international audience of approximately 700,000 Instagram followers without the backing of an agency or label.

Winter’s rise to online prominence began with a livestream she initially hesitated to do, having spent years exploring her interests in anime, gaming and cosplay privately.

Today, her audience extends beyond Germany to countries including the United States and Mexico, reflecting the growing international appeal of her creative content.

Rather than following a conventional career path, Winter built her platform by combining elaborate cosplay transformations with comedy videos inspired by German language and culture.

Winter developed an interest in anime and gaming during childhood, with Pokémon and Sailor Moon among her early favourites.

As a teenager, she began experimenting with cosplay, making costumes, recreating fictional characters and attending conventions as a fan.

At the time, she did not imagine that the hobby could eventually become the foundation of her career.

Her first major step into online content creation came when she began livestreaming in her early twenties. Despite her enthusiasm for cosplay, she was initially worried about making herself visible to a wider audience.

She feared that people might ridicule her interests or that nobody would watch her broadcasts.

However, viewers gradually began showing up, allowing her to establish an early community and gain confidence in sharing her interests publicly.

Although livestreaming helped Winter gain initial attention, she eventually realised that the format was not suited to her long-term goals.

The pressure of appearing live regularly began to wear her down, despite the apparent progress she was making.

Rather than continue with a career direction that no longer felt right, she decided to step away from streaming and concentrate on cosplay.

“The hardest decision wasn’t starting. It was quitting the thing that was finally working, because I could feel it wasn’t me,” Winter said.

The decision allowed her to return to the creative work she had enjoyed long before establishing an online presence.

Her detailed costumes and elaborate recreations of anime and gaming characters subsequently attracted attention beyond her home country.

Cosplay played an important role in introducing Winter to new audiences, but comedy also became a significant part of her online identity.

She began creating short-form videos exploring German language, expressions and cultural differences, giving international viewers another way to connect with her content.

The videos reportedly resonated particularly well with audiences in the United States, helping her reach people who might not necessarily follow cosplay content.

According to the report, approximately 20 per cent of her Instagram audience is based in the United States.

She has also developed a strong following in Latin America, particularly Mexico, alongside audiences in Germany and other German-speaking communities.

Her growing international reach has been achieved organically, without an agency or label directing her career.

Winter’s approach to cosplay goes beyond wearing costumes or recreating the appearance of fictional characters.

She incorporates acting, theatrical expression and energetic performances into her transformations, giving her content a distinctive style.

That same personality carries into her comedy videos, which draw on her German background and observations about language and culture.

Although cosplay and comedy are different formats, both allow her to express her creativity through performance.

Her work also reflects a longstanding connection to anime and gaming culture, interests she developed years before social media became central to her career.

Rather than adopting a new identity to attract followers, Winter has built her online presence around interests that have been part of her life since childhood.

Despite reaching approximately 700,000 Instagram followers, Winter is looking to expand beyond her existing work.

She hopes to produce more video-based content, develop increasingly ambitious cosplay projects and incorporate more performance into her creations.

Acting is expected to remain an important part of her approach as she explores opportunities beyond the traditional boundaries of cosplay.

In the longer term, she hopes to establish herself as a broader pop-culture creator and on-camera performer while continuing to grow her international community.

Winter’s journey demonstrates how a personal interest can develop into a career when combined with experimentation, creativity and a willingness to change direction.

From her early days as a private cosplayer to her decision to leave livestreaming and concentrate on work that suited her better, she has built her audience on her own terms.

With no agency or label behind her rise, the German creator has turned her passion for anime, gaming, comedy and performance into an international social media presence.
