Kamala Harris will step down from her position as Vice President of the United States. She lost the 2024 Presidential election to Donald Trump in the electoral college and by one of the closest popular vote margins ever. It’s a real shame, because Harris was one of the most qualified candidates for that high office in history. Consider: After getting her Juris Doctor, she passed the grueling California bar exam, the toughest in the country. She went to work in the Alameda County DA’s office, and was later recruited to join the San Francisco DA’s staff, where she was put in charge of projects and had other lawyers working under her direction. Eventually she was elected and then re-elected to be DA herself. From there she went on to be twice elected Attorney General of California. So let’s just say she is experienced and well-qualified in the judicial system.
In 2016, she ran for and easily won election to the US Senate. As Senator she gained some national recognition for her tough, prosecutorial style questioning of reluctant witnesses and political nominees. So she had experience in the legislative branch. And then she was tapped by Joe Biden to be his running mate in the 2020 Presidential race, which they won fairly handily. And that added experience in the executive branch to her portfolio. And yet, she had one of the toughest, uphill battles to win the Presidency that could be imagined.

Donald Trump had been running for reelection ever since he lost the free and fair 2020 race and his various attempts at a coup d’etat failed spectacularly. That’s four full years of campaigning. Kind of a big head start. Kamala Harris had three months to organize and fund her campaign. And yet she did, committing to a brutal travel and appearance schedule. Unbelievably, Donald Trump and his staff complained bitterly. They had all those years to prepare positive messages about Trump but instead had loaded up on insults and negativity against Joe Biden. They whined endlessly about not having the time to do the same to Harris. And when she handled and played Trump like a fish during the only debate he had the guts to show up for, panic set in. He was, after all, a convicted felon and was still facing other trials. If Elon Musk hadn’t come riding to Trump’s rescue with his big, fat wallet, who knows how the election might have turned out?
Well, Trump won. Kamala Harris was smarter, tougher, saner, of much better character and certainly better-qualified by any metric. Oh, and better looking, as well. In the end, though, too many elements came together against her. Racism, sexism, the vicious smear campaign Trump’s people did manage to launch against her, various instances of voter suppression and intimidation, and unexpected voter apathy all nibbled away and took their toll. Consequently, Donald Trump will move into the White House once again and the superior candidate and much better human being will move on to whatever future she chooses. She should take pride in knowing that whatever the job – whether elected, appointed, or simply asked to do – she did it and did it well.

Goodbye for now, Kamala. The genuine joy and hope you brought to the increasingly ugly political process will be missed.
BIG P.S. I am fully aware that this post will generate a lot of opposition from Trump supporters. But if all you can come up with are salacious statements about her love life from thirty years ago, rude remarks about her refusal to sit down with the talking heads that are paid to attack her, ill-informed impugning of her legal career, and childish criticism of her laugh, don’t bother. I’ve read and responded to them all too many times already. Oh, and don’t bother accusing me of TDS, either. That is way past being clever or original
