GNOC set to celebrate Olympic Day 2026 in Farafenni

The Gambia National Olympic Committee will commemorate International Olympic Day 2026 with a full-day community event in Farafenni, North Bank Region, bringing together students, institutions, athletes, and community members in celebration of Olympic values and healthy living.
Observed worldwide on June 23, Olympic Day is a global initiative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aimed at promoting physical activity, learning, and participation in sport. The event encourages people of all ages and abilities to embrace the Olympic ideals of excellence, friendship, and respect.
As part of this year’s celebrations, the GNOC has organized a comprehensive programme scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in Farafenni.
Road Races for Students
The day’s activities will feature road races for school children across different educational levels:
2km and 3km Road Runs for girls and boys from Lower Basic Schools.
4km and 5km Road Runs for girls and boys from Upper Basic and Senior Secondary Schools.
All races will conclude at Farafenni Lower Basic School, where participants and spectators will gather for the remainder of the day’s activities.
Community Health Walk
A major highlight of the celebration will be a 3km Health Walk, expected to attract participants from all sectors of society. Representatives from educational institutions, health services, security agencies, banks, telecommunications companies, petroleum firms, local businesses, and community organizations are expected to take part.
The walk aims to promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen community engagement through physical activity.
Inclusive Exercise Session
In line with the Olympic movement’s commitment to inclusion, the programme will also feature an all-inclusive exercise session, allowing organisers, guests, athletes, and members of the public to participate together regardless of age or ability.
Youth Awareness on Irregular Migration
Recognizing the challenges faced by many young people, the event will include an educational session on irregular migration. This discussion is intended to raise awareness and help discourage risky migration practices by highlighting available opportunities and positive pathways for youth development.
Showcasing Emerging Sports
The celebration will further feature martial arts and tug-of-war demonstrations, providing an opportunity to showcase these disciplines and encourage greater participation within the North Bank Region.

The Olympic Day celebration reflects GNOC’s continued commitment to making sport accessible and attractive to all Gambians while promoting health, education, social inclusion, and community development.
By bringing together young people, public institutions, and local communities, the event is expected to strengthen awareness of Olympic values and inspire greater participation in sport throughout the country.
