Nigeria: Rise of bathroom selfies in Nigerian nightclubs

Nigeria’s vibrant nightlife scene has given birth to a peculiar trend: bathroom selfies. Nightclubs across major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Kano are revamping their restrooms to cater to patrons who can’t resist snapping photos in front of stylish backdrops.

Gone are the days of plain, utilitarian bathrooms. Nigerian nightclubs are now investing in luxurious designs, complete with marble walls, exposed light bulbs, and plenty of mirrors. Some establishments take it to the next level by offering complimentary drinks or champagne, which pop out of a small window when a button is pressed on the wall. These designs aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re also a clever marketing ploy. When patrons share their selfies on social media, it generates free advertising for the clubs.

For many Nigerians, taking selfies in nightclub bathrooms has become an integral part of the nightlife experience. Influencers like Comiebarbie, with 100,000 followers on Instagram, admit to rushing to the restroom with friends to take pictures as soon as they arrive at a trendy locale. The trend has even led to rivalries among clubs, with some claiming to have invented the concept of bathroom selfies.

While Lagos is known for its boisterous nightlife, other cities like Abuja and Kano are also embracing the trend. In Abuja, upscale neighborhoods feature “selfie rooms” with psychedelic-patterned walls, while in Kano, lounges are designed with more subtle decor, reflecting the city’s conservative culture. Despite these differences, patrons in both cities share a common love for bathroom selfies.
