Statement on the Ministerial Appointment of Auditor-General, Mr. Modou Ceesay

State House, Banjul, 15th September 2025: The Office of the President clarifies that on 10th September 2025, Mr. Modou Ceesay was called to the State House and informed of his appointment as Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, which he initially accepted, thereby receiving his formal letter of appointment.
Subsequently, Mr. Cherno Amadou Sowe was consulted and appointed as the new Auditor-General.
Mr. Ceesay later indicated a preference to remain as Auditor-General and formally tendered his rejection of the ministerial appointment via letter dated 11th September 2025, received by this Office on 12th September 2025.
The President’s decision to appoint Mr. Ceesay as Minister was based solely on his qualifications and experience in the public sector, finance, and investment. The appointment was not intended to interfere with the operations of the National Audit Office or its audit publications.
The Government congratulates Mr. Cherno Amadou Sowe on his appointment as Auditor-General and assures him of its full cooperation.
