By Sulayman Waan

Patriotic Alliance for System Transformation, Emancipation through Functionalism (PASTEF- Gambia), a political movement has called on President Barrow and Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, leader of the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) to reach a consensus on the draft Constitution to ensure The Gambia have a third republic.

In a letter address to the two political leaders, Ebrima Cham, executive member of PASTEF- Gambia said: “I write with great concern and a heavy heart upon learning that no agreement was reached following your recent closed-door meeting facilitated by Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns. While I understand the complex sensitivity of the discussions, I must express my deep frustration that such an opportunity to move forward with the creation of a new constitution was not seized.”

“As an advocate for national interest over partisan politics, I implore both of you, as leaders of our ruling and opposition parties, to put aside personal and party interests and come to a consensus for the good of The Gambia.”

He said the need for a new constitution to usher a third Republic is of utmost importance for the country.

“We must set aside our differences and work together to create a framework that upholds democracy, the rule of law, and good governance.”

He added that there is a need for a new updated Constitution to enhance democratization and rule of law.

“The significance of a new, updated constitution cannot be overstated. After the momentous changes in our country following the 2017 change of government, it is crucial that we provide the people of The Gambia with a constitution that reflects their aspirations and ensures a future built on democratic principles.”

“The failure to reach an agreement on the constitution thus far risks prolonging political uncertainty, undermining the progress we have made since the end of the Jammeh era.”

Cham urged both parties to rise above their politics and engage in genuine dialogue for the benefit of the nation.

“The Gambian people deserve a constitution that reflects their will and aspirations, one that ensures stability, justice, and prosperity for generations to come,” he said.
