Nigeria: Toluwanisings widow agrees to burial at home

By Zuleihat Owuiye, Nigeria

Damilola Olayemi, widow of late Nigerian gospel singer Toluwanisings, has reportedly agreed to have her husband buried at their residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, following a disagreement with his family over his final resting place.

The development was disclosed by Lanre Alewilese, a close associate and colleague of the deceased, who appealed to Nigerians to stop attacking the widow amid the controversy surrounding the burial arrangements.

The disagreement became a subject of public discussion after members of the singer’s family alleged in a viral online interview that Damilola had opposed their plan to bury him at their home in Ibadan.

According to the family, the 32-year-old widow had expressed a preference for burying her husband in a cemetery rather than at their residence.

However, Toluwanisings’ father reportedly insisted that his son should be taken to his hometown and buried close to his late mother if burial at the Ibadan residence was not possible.

The conflicting positions generated widespread reactions on social media, with some users questioning the widow’s decision and demanding answers concerning the circumstances surrounding the singer’s sudden death.

Amid the growing controversy, Alewilese addressed the situation in an Instagram video on Sunday, November 1, 2026, revealing that the disagreement between Damilola and her father-in-law had been resolved.

He described the situation as a misunderstanding and urged members of the public to exercise restraint rather than add to the widow’s distress during her period of mourning.

According to the singer’s colleague, both parties had now agreed that Toluwanisings would be buried at his residence.

Alewilese also defended Damilola against the criticism she had received online, describing her as an accommodating person and pointing to the deceased’s band members as people who could attest to her character.

He appealed to Nigerians to show compassion to the widow, noting that she was young and already dealing with the emotional burden of losing her husband.

“Please, for God’s sake, let peace reign. Damilola is very young for what she’s currently going through. I’m very close to the deceased; his wife is accommodating. All his band members can attest to this,” he said.

Clarifying the disagreement, Alewilese explained that the conflict between the widow and the singer’s father had been settled.

“The disagreement between Toluwanisings’ father and his widow has been resolved. What happened was just a misunderstanding. The duo have agreed to bury Toluwanisings at his house,” he stated.

He further appealed to Nigerians to stop attacking Damilola and allow the family to make the necessary burial arrangements in peace.

“If you truly love the singer, let his wife have peace now that his burial place has been resolved,” he added.

The appeal comes after the dispute over the singer’s final resting place attracted significant attention online, with reactions from social media users reflecting differing views about family traditions, burial arrangements and the role of a surviving spouse in such decisions.

The latest development suggests that the disagreement over where Toluwanisings will be laid to rest has been settled, according to Alewilese.

His intervention has also shifted attention towards the need to respect the privacy and emotional well-being of the bereaved family as they prepare to bid farewell to the gospel singer.

As discussions continue online, Alewilese’s message remains a call for restraint, urging the public to avoid speculation and allow the widow and the singer’s relatives to navigate their loss without further hostility.
