Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, June 7, 2026 – A new chapter in Gambian beach volleyball was written on the sands of Bissau as Sainey Jawo and Laity Nyabally powered The Gambia to the men’s title at the Zone II Qualifying Tournament for the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Championship.
Their victory was more than a gold medal. It was the restoration of a proud tradition and a powerful reminder that The Gambia remains one of the leading forces in beach volleyball in Africa.
Facing Cape Verde in the final, Jawo and Nyabally produced a commanding performance to win in straight sets, 2-0. From the opening whistle to the final point, the Gambian duo displayed the confidence, composure, and quality that had characterized their journey throughout the tournament.
For Gambian volleyball followers, the triumph carries special significance. Over the years, The Gambia has produced talented beach volleyball athletes and memorable performances on both the regional and continental stages. However, recent seasons have seen increased competition across Africa, making the road back to the top even more challenging. In Bissau, Jawo and Nyabally answered that challenge in emphatic fashion.
Their success was built on months of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. Every training session, every tactical adjustment, and every moment of preparation culminated in a performance that delivered the ultimate reward, a regional championship and qualification for the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Championship.
At the heart of this success was the leadership of Head Coach Pa Baboucarr Barrow, whose guidance, technical expertise, and belief in his athletes helped shape a championship-winning team. Equally instrumental was the leadership and commitment of Bai Dodou Jallow and his executive, whose efforts behind the scenes contributed significantly to the team’s preparation and success.
The achievement also highlights the growing commitment of stakeholders to the development of the sport. The financial support provided by the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) and the Ministry of Youth and Sport ahead of the tournament ensured that the national team could compete and represent the country at the highest regional level. The result demonstrates the impact that targeted investment can have in helping athletes reach their full potential.
The victory further cements the legacy of Sainey Jawo, widely regarded as one of The Gambia’s most decorated and accomplished athletes. Over the years, Jawo has consistently represented the nation with distinction, earning accolades on regional and continental stages while inspiring a new generation of Gambian players.
Beyond the trophy, the victory offers inspiration to young Gambians who dream of representing their country. It sends a clear message that with commitment, support, and belief, Gambian athletes can compete and succeed against the best in Africa.
As the celebrations continue, attention now turns to the African Beach Volleyball Championship, where Jawo and Nyabally will carry the hopes of a nation. Their Zone II triumph has already secured their place in Gambian sporting history, but the journey is far from over.
For now, The Gambia can celebrate a remarkable achievement, a return to the summit of Zone II beach volleyball and the reclaiming of a proud legacy on the sand.
Champions once again. A proud nation. A bright future ahead.
