Nigeria: Lagos APC primaries: Tension builds as group accuses Desmond Elliot of planning violence
By Zuleihat Owuiye, Nigeria
A political pressure group, Surulere Accountability Front (SAF), has alleged that supporters of Lagos State House of Assembly lawmaker Desmond Elliot are planning to disrupt the APC assembly primaries in Surulere Constituency
SAF Chairman Olanrewaju Badmus claimed Elliot’s supporters, including non-residents, are being brought in to cause chaos and force an inconclusive outcome. Elliot’s camp denies the allegations, calling them “laughable” and attributing them to jitteriness over his popularity.
Meanwhile, Elliot has explained signing the impeachment notice against former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, stating he was misled into believing it was approved by President Bola Tinubu. He claimed he was abroad when the impeachment occurred and signed upon return, later learning it wasn’t authorized by Tinubu.
Elliot expressed surprise at Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila’s accusation linking him to the impeachment attempt, citing their longstanding political relationship.
