US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by posting a photo of himself as the “acting president of Venezuela” on his Truth Social platform. This move comes after the US captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores on January 3, 2026.

Trump stated that the US would “run the country” until a transition is complete, citing concerns about Venezuela’s ties with China, Cuba, Russia, and Iran. He demanded Venezuela sever these ties and partner exclusively with the US on oil production. Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro’s vice-president, was sworn in as interim president, with Trump warning her she’d face severe consequences if she didn’t cooperate.

The US operation reportedly killed around 100 people and wounded dozens. Trump indicated the US role in Venezuela could last for years, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio maintaining contact with Rodriguez.
