Whistle of Promise: Sulayman Sanneh, 15-year-old referee redefining volleyball in Gambia

At just 15, Sulayman Sanneh stands tall on the sidelines of volleyball courts across The Gambia not as a player chasing glory, but as a young referee shaping the very spirit of the game.

While many of his peers dream of scoring the winning point, Sulayman chose a different path, one that demands courage, discipline, and unwavering integrity. With a whistle in hand and eyes fixed on every movement, he commands respect far beyond his age.

His journey began on dusty community courts of Serre Kunda East, where he first fell in love with volleyball. But instead of being drawn only to the thrill of spikes and blocks, Sulayman was fascinated by the rules, the fairness, and the responsibility of keeping the game honest. He realized early that referees are the guardians of the sport, the silent leaders who ensure that every match is played with dignity and respect.

Becoming a referee at such a young age was not easy. There were moments of doubt, players questioning his decisions, spectators underestimating him because of his age. But Sulayman never backed down. Each challenge became fuel. Each criticism sharpened his confidence. He studied the rules relentlessly, learned from experienced officials, and carried himself with a maturity that inspired those around him.

Mentored by Senior Referee Muhammed Cham, Today, Sulayman is more than just a referee, he is a symbol of possibility. On every court he steps onto, he proves that leadership is not defined by age, but by character. His calm authority, fairness, and passion for the sport have begun to earn him recognition within the local volleyball community.

Young athletes now look at him and see a new path, one where they can contribute to sports beyond playing. Coaches admire his commitment. Administrators see in him the future of officiating in Gambian volleyball.

Sulayman dreams big. He envisions himself officiating at continental and international competitions, representing The Gambia on the global stage. And if his determination is anything to go by, that dream is well within reach.

From a young boy on a local court to a rising referee with a vision, Sulayman Sanneh is not just officiating matches, he is officiating his destiny.
