The Cornerstone Group unveils Gambia’s first free public EV charging station

The Cornerstone Group, through its subsidiary Cornerstone Sustainability, has officially unveiled The Gambia’s first free public electric vehicle (EV) charging station, powered entirely by solar energy, in a landmark event held at the Cornerstone Center along the Bertil Harding Highway.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several high-level dignitaries, including Dr Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Hon. Rohey John Manjang, Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, and Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, Minister for Youth and Sports, along with senior government officials, private-sector leaders, and members of the public.

The charging station, which operates 100% on solar power, is open to the public at no cost and represents a major step toward sustainable transportation and clean energy adoption in the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Alagie Sanyang, Founder and CEO of The Cornerstone Group, described the initiative as a practical demonstration of the country’s solar potential.

“This is not just a charging station. It is a proof of concept—a proof that The Gambia is blessed with abundant sunlight, enough to power not only our homes, but also our transport and our economy,” he said.

He added that the project reflects Cornerstone’s commitment to leading by example: “All Cornerstone offices are already running on 100% solar power. What you see here today is an extension of what we practise every day. If we can power vehicles with the sun, we can power homes, businesses, and entire communities the same way. This is just the beginning.”

Hon. Rohey John Manjang, Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, commended the initiative and described it as a forward-looking step for the country.

“This project demonstrates that clean transportation powered by solar energy is not a distant vision – it is a reality we are beginning to experience in The Gambia. Initiatives like this are essential for protecting our environment and building a sustainable future,” the minister stated.

The event highlighted the country’s growing interest in renewable energy and electric mobility, with officials and guests noting the importance of public-private partnerships in accelerating the transition to clean technologies.

Cornerstone Sustainability indicated that the charging station is intended as a proof-of-concept project to encourage wider adoption of solar energy for transport, homes, and businesses across the country.

The initiative aligns with the company’s environmental message: “100% Electric. 100% Solar. Zero Emissions.”

The unveiling marks a significant milestone in The Gambia’s clean-energy journey and positions the country among a small number of nations offering free, solar-powered public EV charging.
