Nigeria: The hidden risks of cosmetically upgraded iPhones in Nigeria

By Zuleihat Owuiye, Mamos Nigeria
Nigeria’s smartphone market has been embroiled in controversy over claims of “upgraded iPhones” sold as the latest models. Tech entrepreneur Blord has been accused of selling cosmetically upgraded iPhone XR models as iPhone 17 Pros, sparking a heated debate about consumer trust and authenticity.
Devices may look identical to the latest iPhone models but have different dimensions, making cases and screen protectors incompatible.
Phones from unverified sources may contain malware, tampered chips, or spyware, putting users’ personal data at risk.
Older models like iPhone XR won’t receive the latest iOS updates, leaving them vulnerable to security threats.
Cheap third-party parts may overheat, drain quickly, or fail within months. Modified phones are no longer eligible for official warranty or technical assistance.
Blord claims his “upgraded iPhone 17 Pros” are rebuilt with high-quality craftsmanship and sells them for ₦400,000-₦450,000. However, allegations suggest similar refurbished phones can be bought directly from China for ₦280,000, raising concerns about overpricing and consumer deception
By being aware of these risks and taking necessary precautions, Nigerians can protect themselves from falling prey to cosmetic upgrade scams and ensure they get authentic products that meet their needs.
