Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Decree or the Night of Majesty, is a sacred night in Ramadan that embodies Allah’s vast mercy and offers believers an extraordinary opportunity to seek forgiveness, renewal, and divine blessings. The Quran highlights its significance, stating, “Indeed, We sent it [the Qur’an] down during the Night of Decree. And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (Qur’an 97:1–3)
This night marks the revelation of the Quran, making it a continuing source of spiritual grace for the Muslim community. Worship performed during Laylatul Qadr is described as being better than worship performed for over eighty-three years, demonstrating Allah’s immense mercy.
The Prophet (s.a.w) emphasized seeking this night during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly the odd nights, saying, “Seek Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.” (Bukhari & Muslim). Believers are encouraged to intensify their worship, as the exact date is unknown.
Laylatul Qadr is a night of peace, with angels descending and divine decrees being made for the coming year. The atmosphere is filled with mercy, making it an ideal time for prayers and spiritual growth. The Prophet (S.A.W) taught a special supplication: “O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.” (Tirmidhi).
This night reminds believers of Allah’s vast mercy and accessibility. A single night of sincere worship can erase years of sin and elevate one’s spiritual rank. Believers should approach the last ten nights of Ramadan with humility, devotion, and hope, striving to attain Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
