Nigeria: Police confirm death of inspector, 12 gunmen in fierce battle

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of 12 bandits and one police officer, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, in a fierce gun battle that occurred in Buruku Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force members were on a raid mission across the state when they encountered the bandits. The bandits had laid an ambush for the police team at Agwabi, Tombo ward, Buruku Local Government Area.

The police team responded to the ambush with superior firepower, which subdued the gang. At the end of the crossfire, 12 bandits were neutralized, while others escaped. The injured bandits were taken to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead and deposited at the hospital morgue.

Items recovered from the bandits include three AK-47 rifles, six rounds of live ammunition, camouflage uniforms, and assorted charms.

Unfortunately, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, a member of the police team, sustained a gunshot injury during the battle and was later confirmed dead by a doctor. His corpse has been deposited at the morgue.

The police command has assured the public that efforts are being made to apprehend the fleeing bandits and bring them to justice.
