Residents of Sowo Village in Ogun State blocked the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway to protest the death of four pupils of Iddo Primary School, Kobape, in a road crash. The accident occurred on Wednesday when a vehicle rammed into the schoolchildren while they were returning home.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened at about 3 p.m. when a Toyota Corolla with number plate KSF 579 DM lost control and rammed into the pupils who were walking home from school. Four male children were killed on the spot, and their bodies were taken to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, for certification.
Some angry youths attempted to lynch the driver of the vehicle, but he was rescued by security operatives. The community members later took to the expressway to protest the death of the pupils, which affected traffic flow. However, with the combined efforts of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, the police, and the Nigerian Army, normalcy was restored.
This incident comes barely 48 hours after a motorcyclist and his passenger were crushed to death at the Siun junction of the same expressway in a multi-vehicle collision. A truck lost control and rammed into other vehicles, resulting in the death of four pupils.
The recent accidents on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway have raised concerns about road safety in the area. The authorities are expected to take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
