Nigeria: Nigerian army cracks down on oil theft, arrest 28,recovers 290,000 litres of stolen crude

In a major operation aimed at curbing oil theft in the Niger Delta, troops of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, working with other security agencies, have arrested 28 suspected oil thieves and recovered over 290,000 litres of stolen petroleum product.
The operation, which took place between October 6 and 23 2025 targeted illegal refining sites and smuggling routes across Rivers, Abia, Delta, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom states.
Two illegal refining sites were deactivated along the Imo River, yielding 2,500 litres of stolen crude three drum pots and three receivers.
vandalized pipes, vehicles (including a Peugeot 406, Camry and Toyota Jeep) and 24 pieces of 14-inch pipes from a Mercedes-Benz truck.
Intensified kinetic and non-kinetic operations have disrupted criminal networks, denying them freedom of movement.
The General Officer Commanding 6th Division, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah praised the troops for their efforts and urged them to maintain the momentum, emphasizing the Army’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s oil resources.
This operation underscores the Nigerian military’s ongoing battle against oil theft. a major drain on the country’s economy.
