The Black Queens’ head coach, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the next round of the Women’s AFCON despite a 2-0 defeat to South Africa. The Queens opened their campaign on a disappointing note, with Linda Motlhalo scoring a penalty and Jermaine Seoposenwe doubling the lead for the South Africans.
Despite the loss, Bjorkegren believes that qualification from Group C is still possible. “We knew we were playing against the previous champions, so maybe potentially the toughest game that we can play in this tournament,” he said in a post-match interview.
The coach highlighted the positive aspects of the team’s performance against South Africa, stating, “We did many good things against South Africa, so if we take the good things with us into the next two games, I am pretty sure we are going to make the playoffs, and that is the most important.”
The Black Queens will next face Mali on July 11, followed by a match against Tanzania three days later. Bjorkegren’s confidence in his team’s abilities will be put to the test as they seek to bounce back from the loss and make a strong impression in the tournament.
