Nigeria: From abnormal to post-normal: The Trumpian new world (dis)order
By Zuleihat Owuiye, Mamos Nigeria
The 2024 US presidential election marked a turning point in global politics, as Donald Trump’s unexpected victory signaled a shift from the liberal international order to a post-normal condition. This new era is characterized by volatility, distrust of expertise, and the weakening of established institutions.
The liberal international order, established after World War II, rested on assumptions of globalization, democracy, and multilateral cooperation. Trump’s presidency challenged these norms, prioritizing American interests and transactional diplomacy. This shift reflects a broader transformation, driven by structural forces and technological acceleration.
The Trumpian new world order is a fluid, disruptive, and competitive landscape. Nations that grasp this transformation will shape their destiny, not by drifting with the tide, but by steering their course with clarity and certainty.
