Nigeria: Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari passes away at 82

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 in a London hospital. Buhari’s death was announced by President Bola Tinubu, who described him as a “patriot, a soldier, and a statesman” who served Nigeria with dedication and integrity. He paid tribute to Buhari, saying he was a man of “quiet strength, profound integrity, and unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described Buhari as a “statesman, a colleague, a reputable soldier, and co-patriot who will be sorely missed.”

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo mourned Buhari’s death, saying he was a “true patriot” whose life exemplified discipline, integrity, and service to the nation.

Governors and politicians also paid tribute to Buhari, praising his leadership and legacy.

Burial Arrangements: Buhari’s remains will be flown back to Nigeria and buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic tradition. National Flags at Half: President Tinubu has ordered the national flags to fly at half-staff for seven days as a mark of respect for the departed leader.

Buhari’s government launched a war against corruption, and he was known for his commitment to accountability and transparency.

Leadership: Buhari served as a military head of state from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president.

Contrasting Scenes: While Buhari’s Kaduna home was largely deserted, his hometown of Daura witnessed a steady stream of sympathizers paying their respects. 

Many Nigerians and leaders from around the world have paid tribute to Buhari.
