Nigeria: FEC wants Presidential Task Force on ‘Detty December’

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) met on Thursday and, under President Bola Tinubu, gave the green‑light to a new inter‑agency body called the Presidential Task Force on “Detty December.” Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, broke the news to State House reporters after the meeting.

Musawa explained that the task force is meant to pull together federal and state resources so Nigeria—especially Lagos—can brand itself as a world‑class December destination. The idea is to coordinate everything from aviation and power to interior security, making sure the massive influx of concerts, fashion shows, nightlife and cultural festivals runs smoothly for both locals and the diaspora crowd.

A key part of the plan is the adoption of a national tourism brand, Naija Season,”which the National Council for Arts and Culture will curate across all 36 states all year round. Musawa said the brand will act as a catalyst for the creative industry and give the “Detty December” push the presidential backing it needs.

The task force will also give Lagos, the epicentre of the December festivities, institutional support. With dozens of premium events—concerts, award shows, the Calabar Carnival—Lagos already pulls in huge revenue for hotels, airlines, logistics firms and the creative sector. The new body is expected to attract private‑sector investment and boost Nigeria’s soft‑power footprint.

In short, the government is trying to turn the already‑vibrant “Detty December” into a structured, year‑round tourism engine, hoping to turn the festive season into a major economic driver for the country.
