A group, Edo State Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights, has called for the unconditional release of Collins Aigbogun, former Special Adviser to Governor Tuesday Okpebholo, from police custody. Aigbogun was arrested as one of the masterminds of the anti-kidnapping protests in Ekpoma, Edo State, which turned violent, leading to the arrest of many.

The coalition argues that Aigbogun’s detention is unconstitutional, as the police have not provided evidence linking him to the protest. They also questioned why Aigbogun remains in custody, given the governor’s claim that the protest was sponsored by a Russian-based individual.

The group appealed to Governor Okpebholo to order Aigbogun’s release, citing Section 36 (12) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that a person cannot be convicted without a defined offence and prescribed penalty. They also urged the police to operate within constitutional mandates and principles of justice.

52 suspects arrested for looting and vandalism during the protest have been remanded in prison, but AAU students among them have been released.

The Inspector-General of Police clarified that those arrested were involved in criminal activities, not peaceful protest.

Governor Okpebholo ordered the release of AAU students arrested during the protest, stating that genuine students would be identified and released.
